I had a farm in Africa...
He even took the Gramophone on safari. Three rifles... supplies for a month and Mozart. He began our friendship with a gift. And later... not long before Tsavo... he gave me another. An incredible gift. A glimpse of the world through God's eye. And I thought... "Yes, I see. This is the way it was intended." I've written about all the others... not because I loved them less... but because they were clearer, easier. He was waiting for me there. But I've gone ahead of my story. He'd have hated that. Denys loved to hear a story told well. You see... I had a farm in Africa... at the foot of the Ngong Hills. But it began before that. It really began in Denmark. And there I knew two brothers. One was my lover, and one was my friend...

Un poema en inglés
Stop all the clocks, cut off the telephone,
Prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone,
Silence the pianos and with muffled drum
Bring out the coffin, let the mourners come.
Let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead
Scribbling on the sky the message He Is Dead,
Put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves,
Let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.
He was my North, my South, my East and West,
My working week and my Sunday rest,
My noon, my midnight, my talk, my song;
I thought that love would last for ever: I was wrong.
The stars are not wanted now: put out every one;
Pack up the moon and dismantle the sun;
Pour away the ocean and sweep up the wood.
For nothing now can ever come to any good.

The Rabbi, Noah Gordon's first novel, is the story of Michael Kind, a young rabbi who falls in love with the daughter of a Protestant minister. The Rabbi was on the The New York Times bestseller list for 26 weeks.

- Cuentos orientales (Nouvelles orientales) (1938).
